Hi Sara, thank you for the interview. Dark Oath is a melodic death metal band which rooted around 2009. You have joined the band lately where you have released the second EP, ”Journey Back Home”.
Hi Carla, thank you so much for this interview, it’s my pleasure! Yes, I joined the band later, around a year and a half after it’s birth. Dark Oath already had an EP back then called “Under a Blackened Sky” with the previous vocalist and somehow we needed something to introduce me, because there was no record of me or my voice. So it was just to show something new.

Signed a deal with the Italian label WormHoleDeath to release the debut album under the name of ”When Fire Engulfs The Earth”. How the recordings went and where it took place?
We recorded our album at SoundVisions Studio in Vila do Conde, in Portugal. I can say it was very intense and we felt a lot of pressure. We had such a short time to record everything! But in the end we finished it and we liked the final result, so it’s all that matters.

What can you tell me about the album cover artwork?
The album artwork was made by Joël, our guitarist/composer. The idea was to have something simple, that symbolized the nine worlds of norse mythology and its end (Ragnarök). So we thought of depicting Yggdrasil, the tree of life, (which is said to be the link between and where these nine worlds stand on), surrounded by a circle of fire (since the Ragnarök ends with the worlds engulfed by Surtur’s flames).

Did you wrote new songs for future materials?
Yes, we already have some stuff to use later. But right now we are focusing on this album, and we still have a lot to do before thinking in create new music.

Talk a few things about ”Journey Back Home”.
Like I said it was something just to show something new and to show something with my voice. The production is really bad, we did it at home, we really didn’t know what we were doing. I still like those songs but it’s good to hear it and see that we evolve somehow, to something better, music and production-wise.

Talking about both themes and influences, on which Dark Oath is focusing?
We drink from a lot of fountains. Bands, artists, concepts… This album is about norse mithology so we focused on that to create those songs. However, we will talk about other things. Our idea is to be like story tellers, you know? We want to approach other mythogies, legends and tales from multiple civilizations… We started with norse mythology because we already had some background of it. Of course, Portuguese history is not be left out!

You’ve been sharing the stage with bands like Havok, Corpus Cristii, Tales For The Unspoken, WEB etc; soon you will share the stage with other great bands: Opeth, Kreator, are there any other shows confirmed or planning a tour to promote the new release?
Right now we have some shows confirmed, but we are working on some more.

As you come from Portugal, what opinion do you have about the metal scene from there?
I think it’s cool, the metal scene is alive and we have lots of great bands out there, as well as listeners and fans of the genre. There’s room for improvement, as everything always has, but it isn’t bad at all.

How do you see Dark Oath’s fans?
They are awesome of course! I don’t see them in any particular way, I think it’s just amazing to see someone enjoying your work, sharing it and attending your shows!

Do you have a message for the supporters? Thank you for this interview Sara, hope to see you soon! Cheers!
