Beneath “The Barren Throne”
Unique Leader Records

If heaven is above than below there is…Beneath!!! Beneath is from Iceland and they play brutal death metal with a touch of technicality. The Barren Throne is their second release and it is a very devastating album, in other words my kind of album. First of all I love the amazing artwork that show exactly how destructive this record is. The new singer, Benedikt Natanael Bjarnason growls like a hungry lion and he can also bend his vocals during the odd melodic parts on the album. His vocals are perfect for this kind of brutality. The drumming is like a barrage of machine-gun fire and the guitar riffs are sharp and perfectly executed during the songs. The lyrics are intriguing but I don’t know exactly what the themes of the songs are about or if it is a concept album. The song “Iron Jaw” begins slowly but after a really cool technical riff all hell breaks loose with sweeping solos during the song. “Putrid Seed Of Affection” is a brutal song with a lot of tempo changes and insane riffs. The last four songs “Veil Of Mercy”, “Mass Extinction Codex”, “Storm Drainer” and “Unearthed” are just fast straightforward brutal songs with insane technical riffs and vicious drumming that has no mercy for the listener. This is a ferocious album that will break your bones!!!

90/100
