EERIE “Eerie”
Tee Pee Records

The combination «hard rock/black metal» can be met rarely then never. And on the background of many artists that mixes absolutely different styles and genres (which often result in a shapeless mass of sound) you are trying to avoid such mixes. Life is too short for listening to the bad music. But it’s better not to judge the book by its cover, because in this case Eerie in their self-titled album created something very interesting and extraordinary.

The opening track “Hideous Serpents” do not bother itself to make an appropriate mood for the listener, but brings down all what it got right away: grimy sounded riffs, many solos; interesting, sometimes unpredictable vocals and great rhythm-section work. Drummer Moses Saarni with bassist Dave Sweetapple, as befits a good rhythm-section, are serving as s «skeleton» on which guitarist Tim Lehi «hangs» his harsh, snatchy riffs and great solos. At the same time, this scope isn’t prevent to Moses and Dave to show themselves as professional musicians.

Almost ten minutes epic “Yeti” develops the same idea as in a previous song. Drums are going faster, riffs are changing more intense and the listener’s mood is also changing with the song like a rollercoaster.

In a “Master of Creation” the band shows its darkest side. Strongly marked black metal lines changing with solos, jams and get back to black. Although it’s done sharp enough, this changings aren’t cause any complaints, it’s very organic.

“Immortal Rod” is remembered by its vocals line, diverse from the other works. Shane Baker is still emotional, but the vocals are more smoother than in other songs.

Ending “Blood Drinkers” reminds to the listener what is «hard rock/black metal» as Eerie seeing it. There are no extreme vocals or blast beats 200 bpm in it, but it don’t prevent to create an inferno atmosphere.

According to some, we’re living in a postmodernism era, when all the things are already said and created. So all is left to do is to combine made forms in a different ways. With this, not many can combine things intelligently. Eerie got it.  Although there are some points that need to be improved, this album is a good statement for the start. And it’s very interesting where this band will move on.
