On the off chance that Richard Hoak stops by for a cup of tea it’s probably best not to make him one in your mum’s finest china cup. Everything Hoak touches turns to dust and you wouldn’t want him making a mess on your carpet now, would you?

You see, there’s hardcore, slam, grind and anarchic punk – and then there’s Total Fucking Destruction, led from the front in his own inimitable fashion of course by Hoak. #USA4TFD is TFD’s latest album and if I share with you that it features 23 songs coerced into 28 tight minutes you probably know where we’re coming from.

Each song, plenty of which fail miserably to make it to even 60 seconds, blaze by in a furious shitstorm of apocalyptic rage. The trio set out their stall here from the get-go with “Youth Apocalypse” (37 seconds!) and maintain the bludgeoning brutality through the likes of the marginally longer “Eats Moscow” and the blasphemous brutaliser “Jesus Christ Poseur”.

The nearest they come to something even half approaching a conventional song structure is “World War 4” which miraculously even has time for a couple of razored guitar solos.

Anyone questioning the appeal of  Total Fucking Destruction’s intrinsically defiant musical approach should take note that this most visceral of forces have actually just marked their 20th anniversary. They’ve certainly been around the block a few times since Hoak, who formed TFD following the first break-up of  Brutal Truth, a band in which he was the drummer.

It’s been seven years since the last full length release, Hater, from the Philadelphia punishment perpetrators, so to be able to revel in new injections of nihilism such as “Teenage Warning” and “Anarchy Chaos Collapse Comedy” on #USA4TFD is a treat – albeit one packed with enough dynamite to blow a sizeable hole right through the centre of your speakers.

There are a few unexpected gems floating around within the mayhem, harmonies on “Sideways In Times” among them, while “Anal Trump is Gay” provides an insight into Hoak’s humour and maintains the cutting edge of political insight that has always been a fixture within the grind scene.

Total Fucking Destruction went down a storm at Maryland Death Fest in May and within the insipid murky waters of grind they remain a firm favourite. For the record, tracks 14-23 are available as bonus tracks only on the CD and digital download.
