Hello! Can you tell us about the creative process behind your debut album, “The Perpetuated Festering”? How did you approach writing and recording the songs?
Our guitar player writes the majority of the music, supplemented by the bass player. When we have solid and structured ideas, we invite the drummer to the rehearsal room and we create the drum sections. When the songs are completed musically, we send them to our vocalist, and together we create lyrics and vocal lines.
As a band that was founded during the pandemic, how did the restrictions and challenges of the past year impact your music and creativity?
On the contrary, it was easier for us. We were not allowed to be in the rehearsal room with more than four people, so there were no exterior opinions present to influence our process.
NECROTESQUE plays Old School Death Metal. Can you talk about your influences, and what drew you to this particular style of music?
We are inspired by Asphyx, Grave, Six Feet Under, Dismember, Entombed and Entrails among others.
The Perpetuated Festering cover was created by Dedy Badic Art, who has worked with other notable metal bands. How did you come to work with him, and what was your vision for the artwork?
Dedy send us a friendship request on Facebook, and we checked out his artwork. His Oldschool style was really appealing to us. The artwork is a continuation of the main-theme in our EP and full-length album; rotting beings with festering blobs of flesh, this time after a nuclear disaster.
One of the tracks on the album is titled “Geriatric Cranium Crusher”. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind that song and its lyrics?
Our vocalist, Lodewijk, wrote the lyrics for this track. He tells about a person who is really triggered by old people that are unwilling to get out of his way. Slow and ignorant of their surroundings. This is comedy or satire, of course. Still, it makes for a great source of lyrical inspiration.
What was the idea behind the “Sexual Sadism Disorder” video, and how did you approach bringing that concept to life?
As most of our lyrics, Sexual Sadism Disorder is inspired by the deviations of the human brain. We are interested in psychology and pathology. Lodewijk wrote the lyrics, inspired by Jeffrey Dahmer, the notorious serial killer. The lyrics and the video are about a person with mental health issues. He starts with dissecting and mutilating animals and ends up spiking a dates’ drink, murdering her and finally having sex with her fresh corpse.
NECROTESQUE music features a mix of chainsaw brutality and groovy, swinging rhythms. How do you balance these elements in your songwriting and performances?
We write from the gut and don’t overthink. If and when the riffs become earworms, we know they are good. Then we try them out as a band in the rehearsal room. Does the song urge us to bang our heads, then it’s a success, and we will take it to the audience and the stage.
As a band with members from different musical backgrounds, how do you incorporate those different influences into your music?
All our backgrounds have one thing in common; groove. That’s why we work so well together. Be it in Rock and Roll, Symphonic Black or Technical Deathmetal, the common ground we have is that we are crazy about the groove. We all want to really feel the tracks, not overflavor it with unnecessary fills, frills and riffs. We can do that stuff in other bands, but not in this one. And that works great for us!
What has been the most memorable moment of your musical career so far?
We had a sold out show with Asphyx and Graceless and a sold out show with 1914. Those were brutal. Also, the smaller gigs and venues where we don’t expect people to know is, but then they go nuts and are super enthused, are brilliant.
What are your plans for the rest of 2023 and beyond, in terms of touring and recording new music? Thank you!
We are currently playing gigs in our country and abroad. We will go to the Czech Republic in September to play at United in Brutality and Club Orthodox. Furthermore, we are planning to release our first vinyl later this year, and it’s quite possible that we might record new tracks and maybe release them as well. If one thing can be said about Necrotesque, it’s that we never sit still and are always exploring new ways to bring our music to the fans!
