I remember when Between the Buried and Me started out back in the day when the big Metalcore boom exploded. I have never been a fan of Metalcore and therefore ignored them for a long time. It wasn’t until a few years ago I accidently heard one of their newer songs and got really surprised. This was far from the Metalcore I imagined. Instead we get some really complex modern Prog Metal, like a more spastic Leprous. I decided therefore to check this new album out and got completely blown away.

This is insane on such a positive level. The core of this album delves into the spastic Prog sound of Protest the Hero and The Faceless with its intricate and maddening song structures. From intricate modern Prog Metal with complex yet beautiful melodies, to some ultra-intense Technical Death Metal that blends together into a masterwork of some mad scientist.

But it doesn’t end there. Oh no, in typical Mr. Bungle fashion that is just the beginning. Listening to Colors II feels like going into a record store and grab a minute from every genre, put it all “Revolution in Limbo” for example starts off with some really intense Technical Death Metal and suddenly breaks down into a beautiful reggaeton passage. Added to that we also get some crazy circus jazz that sounds like Dog Fashion Disco on speed, as well as some Funk and 70s Folk and Prog Rock.

Instead of finding some real hit songs and strong hooks, Between the Buried and Me takes us on a maddening rollercoaster ride that sure gives an experience out of the ordinary. The current metal scene surely needs crazy shit like this!

Score: 73 / 100
