Funeral Cult return after a too-long forced hiatus to torture our souls with new EP, Possession Done. While not much (certainly not enough), these three tracks come with the promise of European summer dates (which is a bit on the optimistic side, but the thought is nice), and a new album in the works.

With a sound that encompasses everything great about the Death/Doom genre while avoiding its trappings skillfully, Possession Done is sure to satisfy Funeral Cult fans and gain some new ones at that. The guitars are low and slow with an ominous atmosphere that is as powerful as it is oppressive. The vocal delivery is as good as ever, with the booming death growl losing nothing over the years.

Necroscope starts things off with a dirge that flows against genre norms with a powerful drive that keeps things moving without losing any of the atmosphere attributed to the Doom sound. Layered vocals add a very nice touch, with guttural growls intermingling well with a comparatively higher pitched fry.

Tiny doses of electronic noise top off a wonderful track’s feelings of foreboding to create a well formed piece that stretches the reaches of the genre without forcing itself out of territory.

Frost continues with Funeral Cult‘s distinctive take on Death/Doom. While slower in pace, the drum work still adds a lot of flare, stopping it from dragging, and adding variety.

I Am You Are Me, the Fury closes out the EP with a haunting atmosphere that mixes in a small amount of Black Metal influence. This takes nothing away from the foreboding doomy dirge, but adds a creepiness that fits in perfectly.

Possession Done is a criminally brief work that offers a small amount of hope to the fans of Funeral Cult that have been waiting anxiously for new material. As well as offering the return of these titans of the genre, Possession Done is a perfect jumping off point for new listeners of Death/Doom. All in all it’s nice to have new material, but a lot more would be appreciated. Here’s to keeping hopeful.
