LACUNA COIL “Delirium”
Century Media Records

When a band changing line-up, it’s not so bad. Time to time some fresh blood need to be infused, ’cause not every band can walk the path of AC/DC. But when the large part of line-up is not changed but leaving the band, it seems to be a problem. And if with all of this the band create a record, at least it’s worth attention. That’s what exactly happens with Lacuna Coil now. At first guitarist Cristiano ‘Pizza’ Migliore and drummer Cristiano ‘Criz’ Mozzati leaved, then there was amicable departure of Marco Biazzi. Herewith their new album Delirium will be released as announced and Lacuna Coil planning a tour, with new presented guitarist Diego Cavallotti.

So, Delirium. Andrea Ferro talked in interview to emptyspiral.net that it is, probably, the heavier and the darkest record. On one hand it’s true: the first song “The House Of Shame” pounce on listener with huge drums, solid guitar riff and extremely vocals by Andrea. This magnificence lasts till fairy voice of Cristina Scabbia can be heard. Then it becomes typical Lacuna Coil. It’s inherent to the bands with strongly marked specialty. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

On the other hand, harsh Andrea’s male vocals perfectly interchanges with clean Cristina’s female. Moreover, sometimes there are more male vocals, than female. But it’s only emphasize female parts, like in self-titled “Delirium”, for example. It will sound great in live shows, where hundreds throats will scream chorus with the band. And some rare oriental notes are taking listener back to 2009 – Shallow Life album.

But if vocals and heaviness are expected from Lacuna Coil, some interesting guitar solos were a good surprise for me. Short solo in “The House Of Shame” and perfect in “Downfall” will be interesting for many fans, I guess. And the point is that they are woven organically into nu-metal riffs, which the album is filled with. Although, it’s not present everywhere. And it’s not always needed: “My Demons”, “Ghost In The Mist” and “Take Me Home” are sounds great without them.

Back to review’s top: Delirium is really interesting and heavy enough. I really hope that it will be new chapter for the band, according to what they say (or new spiral turn), and not the beautiful point in the band’s history. There were different cases. But whatever it is, this album worth attention.

Delirium will be released at May, 27 by Century Media Records.
