Spectral Voice / Phrenelith – Split 7″ EP

Well, I REALLY LOVE 7”EP!!! But reviewing them if they’re splits in the same time isn’t easy. That’s like that also in this case. We have here only one song of each band. And it means that it’s very hard to say something about band’s music after only one song. But it’s only very hard, not impossible (especially that this word doesn’t exist in my private dictionary). So let’s go!!!
The first band comes from the most populous city of Colorado – Denver. SPECTRAL VOICE started its existence in 2012 and had of course some releases before this split. But that’re demos and one more split only. What about music it’s old-school Doom Metal with some elements pf Death. Guys call it by Death/Doom, but it doesn’t matter how we’ll call it. That’s what matter is that their music is good! But I have to agree that in this song there’re more elements of Death that in earlier ones. It’s still waltz which crash everything on its road. But we have some subtle speed-ups especially on the beginning of “Peeled Veins”. In general tempo is slow, as it should be in music like that. Riffs aren’t complicated, but change enough often to don’t make it boring. Also drums and bass play in quite various way. Thank to it all music is really interesting and fresh, even if it’s first of all somber. Well, I think that also this funeral growling makes it.
PHRENEITH is also relative young (found in 2013). They also released only demos until now and play old-school Metal. But instead of Americans they come from capitol of Denmark. Copenhagen is huge city with many attractions for everyone. If it’s about Metal world there’s really many gigs – both of these big names like KREATOR, SLAYER, etc. and local ones where play local bands. One of them is, as I said before, PHRENOLITH. And I’ll tell you that this band is good representative of the scene! They don’t play anything new, anything original even in a half percentage. But who cares if these four guys (until 2015 when bassist Jakob joined the band – three ones) make it good?!? We have here piece of good playing Death Metal. Riffs are broken, but not as in old-school Dutch style, it’s more American playing. We have here some tempo’s changes – mostly it’s middle-fast one, but from time to time guys serve us speed-ups (especially in first part of “Once Fertile Soil”). Drums play in rather various way, but it’s always brutal. Tuna (Paweł Tunkiewicz) uses cymbals as often as he can what means almost whole the time. The same I can say about Simon Daniel Larsen’s vocal, but as I know Daniel also scream sometimes. Of course it doesn’t mean that he use or sound like cymbals! Ahhahahahahaha… His growling is classic Death Metal one.
