GRIDFAILURE “Hostile Alchemy”
The Compound Records

Do you know the feeling that you get when you hear something or see something that is eerie and you get a chill or a shiver running up your spine? Well, that’s the exact feeling you get when listening to Gridfailure’s new record “Hostile Alchemy”. Horrifying is an appropriate word, but when listening to “Hostile Alchemy” a sense of dread starts to set in and you begin looking behind you to make sure that nothing is there and you begin peeking around corners. “Hostile Alchemy” is a twisted and startling record that is wholly unforgiving and utterly terrifying.

The odd thing is, is that even though this release is truly horrifying it is also captivating and almost puts you in a trance like state. There are moments where you just get lost in the music and all of the darkness that it has to offer. It’s understandable to be apprehensive of listening to something that is truly unsettling, but once you press play and you begin your journey in to the dark and twisting abyss you just can’t seem to pull yourself away. “Hostile Alchemy” somehow is just as enchanting as it is nightmarish and you ultimately get sucked in and cannot stop listening.

“Hostile Alchemy” seems to play off of fear and tries to make you as unsettled and anxiety ridden as it possibly can, and man does it work. Through twisting, ominous sounds you become wrapped up in this dark, dense and skin crawling atmosphere that you don’t seem to be able to climb your way out of. With the amalgamation of nerve wracking and haunting sounds you get a very intense and very dark listen that really is unforgiving. Gridfailure doesn’t ease you into this record either as you are just thrust head first into this startling and encompassing listen that takes you to the darkest and deepest corners of fear and dread.

This record is dark, dense and all encompassing record that you end up having a hard time shaking. It’s just as intoxicating as it is frightening and the more that you listen the more that you want to continue listening. “Hostile Alchemy” twists and turns and you never really know where it will end up next and what sounds you will be hearing next and that is what makes it so unique and interesting to listen to. With wonderfully grim electronics, shrieks, ominous winds in the background, disturbing voices coming through the static and much more, you get a full blown nightmare scape that you don’t want to stop listening to.
