Integrity- Howling, For The Nightmare Shall Consume
For very nearly the past three decades, Integrity’s fiery brand of metallic hardcore has set alight listeners ears as well as audiences eyes and ears across the globe since then, and on their new album Howling, For The Nightmare Shall Consume they don’t change that method one bit. In fact, if anything, they seem to get heavier and more angry as the years pass by and this latest album is a lesson in that pure anger.
The fact that this album (their first since 2013 Suicide Black Snake) is their tenth album is reason for kudos enough but the fact they are constantly on the road and constantly also releasing EP’s and split records all the time makes the fact that it hasn’t dulled their vicious edge all the more impressive.
Frontman Dwid Hellion sounds even more pissed off than he has done in years and soon as the icy riffs of opening track Fallen To Destroy start and that almighty roar of Hellion is unleashed, then you know you’re in for a hell of a time.
Tracks on Howling, For The Nightmares Shall Consume like ”Blood Sermon”, ”Hymn For The Children Of The Black Flame”, ”Burning Beneath The Devils Cross” and ”String Up My Teeth” are the type full on bruisers of songs that Integrity are famed for. They are hardcore songs with the spirit of metal flowing through them and are packed and are so heavy, even by Integrity’s heady standards. The energy just flows off these tracks and it is an energy that flows throughout the entire album.
There is a certain versatility to Integrity sound too, on this album with the full on metal assault of Die With Your Boots On (Absolutely nothing like the Iron Maiden song) that sees Hellions deadly roar in full effect to the sprawling might of Unholy Salvation Of Sabbatai Zevi to the menacing 7 Reece Mews, a furious song with a snail paced groove that sounds like an unholy version of Nick Cave fronting Sheer Terror. The one thing that all the songs have in common is that they are heavier than thou in one form or another, an Integrity staple since the very beginning of the band.
As Howling, The Nightmare Shall Consume concludes with the punishing title track, you are left shattered as this album will really take it out if you with its sheer intensity.
This is another stunning album from Integrity and despite For Being around for so long, they have no signs of slowing down and we can all be thankful for that.
