ZORNHEYM “Where Hatred Dwells And Darkness Reigns”

This is one of a few stragglers I have to review… so apologies to the band and the label for my tardiness
I think it was a year or more ago that Sweden’s Zornheym released a couple of singles, namely, The Opposed and A Silent God, well in advance of this album being released. On one hand, they got me excited about this release as both tracks were unbelievably good, especially A Silent God. The downside is that they’re the best tracks on the album. So while the album isn’t a let-down, they did play their trump cards a little too early.
So, rewinding just a little, Zornheym features ex and current members of Devian, Dark Funeral, Diabolical and Facebreaker. And that pedigree is reflected in the music. Which I guess sits somewhere between Dimmu Borgir and Therion, without really sounding like either. Although they edge slightly more towards their fellow countrymen, than they do with their Norwegian cousins.
So, this is big Symphonic Metal, with choirs, female vocals, and strings. The sound is huge and you know that seeing this live with an orchestra and a choir would be an unforgettable experience.
My only real complaint is that some of the tracks are more memorable than others. Biggest culprit is probably the final track Hestia. As it’s not the rousing finale this album deserves and the album ends with a whimper, when it should have been a massive chorus, orchestra and whatever else they could throw at the kitchen sink.
There is so much about this album that is good, I can overlook the small niggles, for the wonderful music they’ve created.
