A ‘studio project’ from a duo in Germany called The Last Seed released their first album Hellboy in June 2018 and it has been sitting in my ‘to do list’ ever since. Once I listened to it (and a freezing cold November really got me in the mood), the similarities with Ulver’s Nattens Madrigal were obvious but there’s a lot more to Hellboy than that…

Not only do we get to enjoy an artistic wolf theme as thick as the black hackles of Cerberus in Hellboy but we get but an album that is simple, high treble and misanthropically emotive to its core.

With no less than 11 tracks that run at 42 minutes, The Last Seed have stocked this album to the brim with their brand of Black Metal – and it goes straight for the jugular.

By combing harmonic, simplistic but so damn hypnotically cathartic riffs, Hellboy is given life. The album relies on this method throughout and is combined with a lyrical approach that leans heavily on the side of distain for humanity. As you’d expect, we get to hear The Last Seed leading us down a pathway to the darker parts of our human emotive conditioning. Hellboy is the bolster against it, a spear in its neck.

If you’re a fan of Black Metal this is going to be a special treat for sure. If you are a fan of Nargaroth then I believe this is for you too. The Last Seed have a fantastic grasp on how to reach out and touch you with a riff which I always saw the former as more than capable of. Maybe it’s a German thing? All of this album touches me, every track has a beautiful strength but some of the parts are so full of raw emotion that I empathise with their vision.

The Last Seed have spoken of new material soon in interviews, placed emphasis on the importance of taking the journey in lyrically and perhaps one day, if their tour bus is fixed, we may see them live. For now though, I truly and strongly advise you check out their special editions and limited runs of the Hellboy album over on Bandcamp. Once it’s noticed, I predict Hellboy will go down as a Trve Kvlt classic.
