Nazxul is a black metal band spawned in Australia in 1993, and to date they have released 2 full lengths in 1995 and 2009. Here we see their third, entitled Irkalla, and they keep with the trend of icy cold black metal tinged with melody and atmospheric elements. For those looking for a straightforward black metal album in the vein of Emperor, this is it. long track lengths make for an encompassing atmosphere best listened to as a whole. The symphonic elements are done very well, yet they overlay most of the album. The songs boast power and have some catchy moments. The production sounds slick and the tempos are quick. Not to mention this album is dripping with evil. Rising Storm and Stygian are some particularly well done tracks, with ominous ritualistic sounding chants to open the former. The vocals are sinister and powerful, and the keyboards season the songs perfectly. There is not much to be said other than that a band with such a long history can still put out relevant and extraordinary music. It is more suited for those who listen to black metal consistently, as this is all you will get here, which is not a bad thing. It offers a glimpse back into the past, when this type of metal was born and brings it into the modern age. All in all, Nazxul is black metal you can count on, and Irkalla is a high energy, riff filled experience for those willing to take part.
