Hi! In what ways did you evolve your approach for The Savage Winds to Wisdom compared to Soul Furnace?
I think it was time, Soul Furnace was very rushed and we didn’t really have a plan for the band at that point. plus we were just getting used to playing together. We spent way more time putting The Savage winds together, writing and recording.

Describe the main idea or story that shaped the “The Savage Winds to Wisdom”.
I think the story is the same, we are still refining Black Lava and what our sound is.

Reflecting on the album, which band member’s input made a notable difference?
Ben is the main songwriter in the band. He writes the riffs and loose drum patterns for Dan. Once that is done I write the lyrics and Dan adds his own drum style to the tracks. That’s the way it’s been from the start and it will continue that way.

Did any specific parts of the music directly influence your lyrics?
The music is directly what influences my lyrics, Ben will send me a song he’s working on, i will sit there and most of the time stare into my garden and let the riffs and my imagination create its own atmosphere and environment.

With new material, what changes are you making for your live performances?
We are working on our new set list for upcoming shows and have been picking tracks off both albums.

The Melbourne metal scene is known for its diversity. How has it impacted your sound?
Melbourne has a massive scene with genres of metal for everyone, I would say everyone in the band has come from different corners of that. so starting Black Lava has definitely brought some clashing styles and influences.

Share the most unexpected feedback you’ve received about the album.
Well most feedback is positive to be honest, but i think we confuse some people with our mixed style.

Which sources were most influential for the music and lyrics of this album?
I think it’s just our love for metal. A lifetime of bands and albums that have shaped us, a drive to make our own music and work together with like minded people.

Where do you envision your sound progressing in the future?
Black Lava is still a young band, I think it’s been 3 years since we started… Who knows, with this new album I think we are where we want to be.

Which emotions or moods were you aiming to evoke with this album?
I think everyone will see it a different way, but I want it to float between two worlds. a paralyzing dream to bone shattering fury.

How did the home studio setting influence your recording approach?
I wouldn’t say it influenced us but having our own studio is an amazing thing. We don’t have to worry about money or travel and can take our time with recording. I think that is the key, giving yourselves as much time as you can to try new things, work and push each other.

What benchmarks or goals did you set for the album, and how do you measure its success? Thank you for your time!
I’m happy with the outcome, and I’m keen to see what people in my metal community think, Black Lava is a mix of all things we have grown up with, for better or worse.
