Hello! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your new single “Eye to Eye”?
Triumph in the face of adversity. It’s a story of the underdog.

How does “Eye to Eye” fit into the overall sound and theme of your album “The Revenge of Heads On Fire”?
Eye to Eye is an outtake from The Revenge of Heads On Fire sessions. It stands better alone, that is why it is not on the album proper.

Can you talk about the collaboration with Danny Morton on this single and how it came about?
Danny and I met in San Francisco and have been in a few bands together over the years. Our mutual love of Funkadelic and Hawkwind is what formed an initial bond between us.

At the time of writing Eye To Eye I was at a loss for lyrics. I had the title and concept but for the life of me I could not come up with a vocal line I liked. So I reached out to Danny to see what he could come up with and boy did he nail it!

How do you approach writing and recording your music, especially when dealing with heavier and more psychedelic themes?
There is not one approach that we use be it when writing or recording. The moment dictates the approach.

In the case of Eye To Eye, I had both riffs, the begging part and the end part, already written before bringing them to the band. At the time I was envisioning each riff to be a basis for their own song. It was Ego’s idea to put both parts together to form one song. The track was recorded not long after this decision was made.

I like catching a song in its infancy. Eye To Eye is one of those moments when all players were on and in-sync. One take for instruments and one take for the vocals.

How do you balance the more experimental and psychedelic elements of your music with more conventional rock and punk influences?
It’s not consciously thought out. We create what we want to, it’s that simple. When we are putting together an album is when we start to look at the songs in a way of how they work together. We are all about a flow. As songs become more concrete they dictate the flow and it’s our job to follow what they tell us.

What do you hope listeners take away from your music, particularly with this latest album and single?
A bit of respite from one’s daily existence. A tool to travel within themself. Within that personal space I hope they feel a greater connection to all.

There is a rhythm to the universe. We are a part of the universe making us connected to that greater rhythm. Music is an out growth of this instinctual rhythm and is a path in which one can use to connect with all.

How has your music evolved since your earlier releases, and what do you see as the biggest changes?
The music is more complex now than it was in the beginning. We’ve never placed restrictions on our music. This has allowed us the freedom to explore all sides of our creativity and not be stuck to just one style or way of doing things.

Your live performances have been praised for their energy and intensity. How do you translate that experience into recorded music?
It’s all about catching a moment in time. A feeling that transcends the music itself which gets translated to the listener.

Performance is immediate. All imperfections and blemishes are visible. This is what adds to the energy and intensity of a live performance.

We don’t obsess on perfection when in the studio. Those moments when you make a mistake usually end up being the parts of a recording that bring it to life and give it character. We just let it all hang out. The good, bad and the ugly.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a band, and how did you overcome it?
Traversing all of the changes within an industry that has typically been behind the advances in technology. At this point there is no blue print on how to “do it” like it seemed there was before the internet and the emergence of social media/streaming platforms.

The way we overcome it is simply continuing to forge ahead. In the end we are artists. Our medium is music, so we continue to mold our music in our ongoing exploration of our medium.

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or performances that your fans can look forward to?
We will be touring Europe this coming May/June and then back again at the beginning of August.

We’re about half way through working on our next album which will be out in the Spring of 2024.

There are a few other things in the pipeline but it’s too early to discuss then. All in due time.
