Netherbird is a Melodic Black/Death metal band from Sweden founded in the year of 2004. About 10 releases, they hope as next year to release a new album but we will find out it from Nephente, the vocalist of Netherbird who accepted to answer me some questions about the band for this interview.
netherbpic2 Hello Nephente, how have you been?
Salutations from Sweden, all is fine thanks. There is even some slightly warm days here so I cannot complaining. Spending some time on the bike cruising the Swedish countryside, life could be worse indeed!

First, tell me when Netherbird was founded.
Netherbird was founded by myself, Grim and Bizmark on October 30th 2004. The reason why I know this is because we agreed upon working together when we were at the Dissection rebirth gig.

”The Ferocious Tides Of Fate” is the band’s last release from 2013. Tell me about it.
The Ferocious Tides of Fate is our third full length album and as such I am pretty pleased with it, we are now starting to find a more distinct sound, slightly rougher and “analogue” than our previous albums. It is now about one and a half years since we released it and it meet good reviews in general and I think it does deserve to be heard. But as always we tend to look forward to the next release and that is where my mind is now. And I think our next album will be a very natural progression from The Ferocious Tides Of Fate, even deeper into the soundscape and music of the early 90’s black/death metal underground.

What can you tell me about the others Netherbird releases?
We have been putting out quite a number of releases since we started in 2004, I think 10 official not counting TFTOF. I would recommend those reading this to check out http://netherbird.com/index.php/music where they all are listed with links youtube-versions and so on. I see a clear and natural progression for each release. From our previous efforts I still hold Lighthouse Eternal (Laterna Magika) as a strong one, but there are more gems in the pile.

Are you going to release a new album this year?
No, I do not think we will release anything new during 2015, we are currently on a sort of “pause” so it will take time before anything new would surface, if ever. Only time will tell.

Who mainly writes the lyrics?
I am the one penning the lyrics for the tunes.

What are the lyrical themes?
My lyrics are often my own reflections upon existence, and they tend to be somewhat dark but with a hint of hope since I am a strong believer in the importance of carving our own reality. I think Metal-Archives wrote that our themes are “darkness and struggles” and I think that sums it up somewhat. But my lyrics can mean something differently for someone else reading them, so I tend to keep them open for interpretation. So the real themes are up to each listener in the end.

You had Adrian Erlandsson (ex-Cradle Of Filth, The Haunted, Paradise Lost etc.) as drummer. What albums did he record and any reasons why he had left the band?
Yes, Adrian Erlandsson was a member 2008-2010. It was a privilege to work with him and he is friend of both myself and the band and we tend to meet now and then. But due to his schedule it was not possible for him to be part of Netherbird as we started playing live, he is a full member of Paradise Lost, At The Gates and The Haunted so that keeps him busy since all bands are touring actively, so it was a mutual and natural decision when he left us.

What are the band’s influences?
The most obvious influences are Vinterland, Dissection, Emperor and Unanimated. But we tend to like almost everything released during 1989-1994 when it comes to Scandinavian black and death metal. Each member have a vast array of influences besides metal, so we take our inspiration from a lot of different sources really.

Are you going to tour this year?
No, Netherbird will not tour during the foreseeable future. We have done a number of tours and in the future I think we will rather focus on festival gigs and a smaller number of gigs here and there.

Do you have a message for the fans?
Thank you for supporting the underground metal scene by reading this interview. Do check out our releases: http://netherbird.com/index.php/music And if you like what you hear, make sure to connect on facebook etc. We have felt a strong support for the last ten years, and it makes it worth all the struggles. Thanks you and see you around!

Thank you Nephente, all the best!
