Abigail, «the most evil band in Japan» (according to themselves) pleasing the fans with their new, sixth album The Final Damnation (sixth LP, without countless number of their EP’s, live and split albums).
Continuing the proud traditions, the album is full of punk-evil guitar riffs, fast solos, fierce drums and glorious in their ironical misogyny lyrics. No, really, this band can be loved only for the songs’ titles: “Whiskey, Coke and Bitch”, “Sex&Metal”, “Sweet Baby Metal Sluts” – ain’t it lovely? On the other hand, if someone take them seriously, he’s a goddamn fool. Especially with Yasuyuki Suziki’s snarls and markedly raw sound, allegedly straight from 80’s basements.
Musically this album is a mix of thrash, black-metal and punk. However, black-metal is the least here. But in “Holocaust by Evil” black-metal parts are matches perfect with simple riff and melodic solo. The rest is thrash, sometimes strongly marked (“The Final Damnation”, “Open The Gates of Hell”) and sometimes it’s kind of crossover, where it’s more punk than anything else (“No Pain! No Limit!”, “Whiskey, Coke and Bitch”). However, guitar solos should be noted. Full of melody, that not always inherent to this genre. Also, some of them are inherent to NWOBHM, sometimes insomuch that the idea «I’ve heard it before somewhere» isn’t leaving you for a long time. With this, you can’t stop to press «repeat».
Vocals… Well, I will not prevaricate: it can be hardly called vocals. Rather it’s «melodic snarls and screams», and at times the word “melodic” is superfluous. But wait! I’m not saying it’s bad! These kind of vocals are matches pretty good for the music, and sounds quite favorably with raw “true” record sound.
The Final Damnation can’t be called «renaissance of thrash» and even, probably, «Japanese look on an 80’s thrash-metal». If we’ll get Yasuyuki’s vocals off the record, we’ll got musically the same work, that Motorhead and Venom have done 30 years ago. But, damn, this album is good, especially by its sound. Do not pass it by!
The Final Damnation will be released on August, 15 on CD format, and on September, 30th on Vinyl format via Nuclear War Now!
