ADX “Non Serviam”

What’s come to your mind when you hear the word «France» (excluding sad reality of nowadays)? Paris, Eiffel tower, Champs Elysees, croissants, coffee and many unnecessary silent letters in French. What about French music? Brigitte Bardot, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, provocateur Serge Gainsbourg and many others. But there are some issues with metal music. Some can remember Anorexia Nervosa or maybe even Les Légions Noires. But one of the best power-speed-metal bands are living and still creating music precisely in France. They are ADX.

ADX (from «Acier DouX», abbreviation used in metallurgy) formed in 1982 and quickly get popular in France. In 1985 they released their first album Exécution, two more after and then ADX tried to gain auditory beyond their mother land by releasing an album in English – Weird Visions. Though, the record was unnoticed, and that affected musician’s spirit, so the band splits up for the first time.

Re-releasing the Exécution in 1998 caused so huge fans kickback that the band decided to get back on stage. As well as their fifth album Résurrection was recorded that year. But suddenly ADX decide to get of stage again, till 2006. Then, with immense fans’ effort there was band’s reunion and they continue to perform and release albums. So, here it is, tenth album called Non Serviam.

The album starts with anxiously sounding intro “L’aube noire” (Black Sunrise), which continues with a little bit pathos keyboards passage and turns to a first track “La mort en face” (In A Face Of Death) – «classic» power-speed-metal with heavy guitar riffs, melodic chorus and technical solos and bridges.

“La complainte du demeter” (Demetria’s Cry) with an excellent intro is a pure speed-metal, as is. Also, there is interesting bass solo in the beginning, and heavy-metal triplet riff.

“B-17 Phantom” is one of my favorite songs in this album, with powerful riffs, great drummer’s work and memorable chorus.

Tittle track “Non Serviam” (I Will Not Serve – Latin) made me utter surprised (except involuntary headbanging). I don’t know how this band passed by millions of metal-heads. Seems like this song was taken from International Bureau of Weights and Measures as an exhibit «Etalon of Metal». Riffs, heaviest drums, combination of guitars in chorus, this formula is known for a long time. But there are few who can make it good and catchy. ADX made it.

In “Les oublies” (Forgotten) main riff goes more to thrash than speed-metal. But solos and vocals are bringing it back to the style borders. «Male choir» vocal line parts are emphasize the heaviness.

“Cosaques” (Cossacs) main riff reminds Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper”. But precisely reminds, and not copies it.

Non Serviam ending with great song “Théâtre de sang” (Theatre Of Blood), in which the band showed the mastery of each member very diverse and successfully.

So, Non Serviam is a new album from the masters of metal. Masters, because if Judas Priest (in its best years), Helloween (in its best years) or Gamma Ray were singing in French, they would sound exactly like ADX. Brilliant!

The album will be released on June, 10
