Arallu “Geniewar”

Unfortunately we are not all-powerful. And we can’t write about all albums that we want physically. Though sometimes it worth not only to look ahead, but also look back. So today we have some kind of retrospective.

Arallu is one of the eldest Israeli extreme-metal bands. Started its way in 1999 as solo-project of Moti ‘Butchered’ Daniel, former live bassist from Melechesh, Arallu quickly enough gained audience attention. Black-metal anger and aggression with masterfully woven oriental motives gave the result: five studio albums, several European tours, festivals in Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria and Turkey. Also you can see the band at “Global Metal” movie.

The last one for today, fifth album Geniewar is the same black-metal, full of anger and hate. At the same time there is a place for sad, oud, kanoon and darbuka – traditional music instruments. The band also played metal classics – “Powerslave” by Iron Maiden in their original style.

The album contains 10 songs, in each of there can be found infernal mix of guitars, drums and oriental instruments. From the short instrumental intro “Evil Finest” the listener will be intrigued with that one masterful mix. And if it’ll be catchy (and it will), it will not let you go until the end of an album. Even despite the «scaring» songs’ length (“From the Desert to the Ice”, for example, is 07:07). Although, after 18-minutes “Empire of the Clouds” release, metalheads had some new length standard.

Talking about quality, it worth noting the fact, that Geniewar mastered by Maor Applebaum, known by his work with such bands and artists like Faith No More, Sepultura, Mayhem, Rob Halford, Therion and Yngwie Malmsteen. So Arallu find that thin line between «true» sound and quality.

Arallu also emphasize their apolitical. But living in Jerusalem, where terror isn’t something distant, but everyday reality, it’s hard to close your eyes and be blind to what’s happening around. That’s why there are such songs in an album like “Hayalim Almonim”, “Tzook Eitan” and “Giv’at hatahmoshet” – they glorify those ones, who never surrendered to terror and had the courage to resist foundamentalism.

In Mesopotamian mythology “Arallu” is the underworld kingdom ruled by the goddess Ereshkigal and the god Nergal where the dead are judged. But let me quote the mentioned “Global Metal” movie: «…then you realize that your reality is scarier than any Mesopotamian demon you can summon. I get scared when I walk down the street and someone will show up and explode just because he hates me». Because there is much more hate and evil in a real world, than in any, bloodiest mythology.
