ASSASSIN “Combat Cathedral”

It’s time for one of many legends of German Thrash Metal!!! Hell knows why they were never as known as KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, SODOM, TANKARD or PROTECTOR with few other bands (like for example VENDETTA) ASSASSIN was in “2nd league” – that’s what I remember. I NEVER agreed with that, of course. Especially that music isn’t football, ice hockey, handball or other volleyball to classify bands in such way! Besides I didn’t see (hear) any difference in technical abilities, musicians creativity and stuff like that between for example Mile Pedroza’s brigade and them or VENDETTA! Well, I see some difference – ASSASSIN just had bad luck. Zenith of that happened in 1989 when whole band’s equipment was stolen. It was by the way the only reason why guys with heavy hearts had to decide about splitting-up of the band.
But let’s talk about newest, fifth in line album of Düsseldorf’s dwellers! It contains twelve compositions of pure old school Thrash Metal. We have here mostly galloping drums, short and full of aggression riffs. Well, it’s truth that sometimes, but let’s say: very sometimes, they’re a little more expanded or that we can hear something what we could call mini-solos, sometimes even real ones. “Ambush” begins from great bass playing (with a little imagination we can even call it solo – short, but always). But in general that’s just like I said. We have here practically whole the time real Thrash Metal playing which don’t let you stay calm and just listen to it. I mean, it provokes to pogo or at least strong headbanging! I have unfortunately to avoid this. Not at all, but I need to make some breaks for writing few words of this review. Of course we have some moments when guys let us to take a rest a little. Than even layman can hear how good they’re in this they do. Somebody more having an ear for this kind of music, I mean Metal in general, can hear this permanently! There’re a lot of technical relishes here. They’re in some kind hidden. But hearable very well for someone who is able to listen carefully – as I noticed after my buddies and me that’s piece of cake for Metalheads even during wildest pogo!
This is generally on very high technical level. OH… few words about vocals of Ingo Bajonczak. He has very interesting and simply created for Thrash Metal timbre of voice. It’s a little hoarse, but very clean in the same time. We can hear every single word which he sings, but in the same time from every word emanate aggression and energy!
OK, I’m backing to headbanging! And strongly recommend all of you to do the same – get this album and make headbanging during listening to whole “Combat Cathedral”! I’m also sure that it’ll be the same with you as with me – after first listening to this full-kenght you’ll want to more and more!
