DDent is a French instrumental project of guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Louis Lambert and drummer Marc Le Saux. First EP ‘Chien Noir’ (in reference to Churchill’s “black dog” metaphor) sees the day in 2013, which quickly leads to the addition of live musicians to the project. After a two-year hiatus, the project rises in the winter of 2015 with a new set of live musicians, the songwriting remaining the exclusive preserve of its main founder and guitarist. Debut album ‘آكتئاب‘‘ (melancholy, depression) is recorded at Skyhammer Studio (Conan, Electric Wizard, Napalm Death) in Liverpool.
Louis Lambert tells about an album: “Initially, this record was written as one long, extensive track which has a focus around the central theme of being state of melancholy, a decision to go this route coming from a conversation I had with a close friend about Arabic psalms and my fascination with the arts, philosophy and theology of Islam”. An artwork emphasizes it with its white background and Arabic calligraphy made by Mohammed Yacoub. Multiculturalism, you know. But let’s get back to the music.
An album contains eight tracks with Arabic names – “Habouz”, “Arzel”, “Houri”. Each of them depicts melancholy and depression in many different ways.
The amalgamation of various music elements from post-rock, post-metal, shoe gaze and industrial creates deepest soundscapes, full of melancholy, transmitting it to the listener. Actually it’s not a music, but the soundtrack for the inner journey, your experiences, fears, oppression and depression. And for me, instrumental is an ideal form, because any words are unnecessary here.
Ludwig van Beethoven once said: “Music is indeed the mediator between the spiritual and sensual life”. ‘آكتئاب‘‘ is not bad illustration for this quote at all.
