KHANUS “Rites of Fire”
I, Voidhanger Records

I must deeply disappoint these of you who think that in Scandinavia (and surely Norway and Finland – in historic and cultural way this country is part of Scandinavia even if Finnish isn’t related in ethnic way with Swedish and so on) there’re only Black Metal acts! Firstly, here’s not as cold as superstitions say /actually especially on summer there’s no difference between Scandinavia and rest of northern Europe) and secondly bands like KHANUS are the best proof that this superstition about kind of Metal which’s supposedly solely playing here is also false!

Guys call their music Death Metal, but I’m not sure if it’s the best term to describe what we have on “Rites of Fire”.  Surely we have here quite lot elements of this sub-genre of Metal, but it’s also surely not all what we have here. Music in general is in slow tempo and a little psychedelic. Of course it’s first of all coz of rather easy, but twisted riffs and vocal. Mostly it’s more like recitation made by sick growling, but the most often by something like clean, the same sick, voice, some screams. Riffs are unstable, even erratic, very often broken. Sometimes they’re quite typical for Death Metal, but even then they create rather sick atmosphere, play strange melodies (not as strange as rest of the time, but anyway). Drums aren’t “better”. Seemingly there’s nothing very strange in its melodic line. But thanks to using with relish (not all the time, of course) cymbals it’s also sick!

The band is very young act – it was born in Oulu last year. But if somebody thinks that there play some green horns and that’s why music is some cacophony without any keynote or idea than is wrong, very wrong. In KHANUS play really experienced musicians. We can tell this especially about Joonas “Sovereign“ Juntunen (bass, guit, voc) and Juuso “KHAA-man” Juntunen (dr, voc). Except them band is creating by: Maltiis (voc) and James “LordT” Smith (dr). “Rites…” is of course their first release ever and it contains 4 sick songs.

So if you like to torture your ears by something like that – get it!!!
