Imagine an ancient swamp in a dark thicket of forest that bubbles up, emitting a caustic stench. Shadows circle around the swamp, and from time to time, terrifying creatures climb out of the swamp and dive back into the dark slurry. This is exactly the swamp that comes to my mind when I listen to the new KHOLD album. Because this is depressing, venomous (viscous) music that absorbs you, compelling you to listen to the album over and over again.

Sometimes the swamp landscape can change, instead showing an abandoned cemetery, with tilted grave crosses, but as you understand, it doesn’t get any more fun.

Speaking more musically, this is black metal with a mechanical and clear rhythm—the drums really sound like a hammer, and the bass emphasizes it very well. It features clear, catchy guitar riffs, biting vocals, and sometimes a viscous sludge atmosphere.

Speaking personally, this band is a perfect example of modern, coolly recorded black metal music that doesn’t contain anything superfluous – no snots, no sweets, no light – only the atmosphere of a dark forest that is as unfriendly to humans as possible.

And this band drives me crazy headbanging while listening.

I will single out some songs:
“Heks du dømmes til død” – An unexpected melodic solo at the beginning reminded me of something from King Diamond. The very dark atmosphere, along with a somewhat sludgy guitar that intensifies towards the end, further enhances this mood.
“Trolldomsdømt” is remembered for the only blast beat on the album, near the end of the song.
“Dølgsmål” starts with a pure rock’n’roll riff, but with the next riff KHOLD is back in full swing.
