Germany’s Panzerkrieg 666 brings us a quick EP of refreshingly straightforward black metal tracks on their debut. Hard hitting and fast with enough variation to keep both absent minded and eagle eared listeners interest, this is an enjoyable piece of music and an excellent primer on the band’s intentions moving forward.

Panzerkrieg 666 comes right out of the gate with a sonic barrage that is unique in its simplicity in today’s black metal scene. The duo features an almost punk like direct approach to its sound, which is not to say that it is without stunning musicianship throughout. But the straightforward approach is certainly ear catching in a world overrun by ambient introductory tracks and interludes (which there’s nothing wrong with, when done right).

The EP features production on the higher end of the underground Black Metal scene, which is nice. There is certainly nothing over the top going on, nothing too fancy that it sounds out of place. The instrumentation and vocals all sit nicely inside the mix and deliver the classic sound that one looks for when seeking out music such as this.

I would like to note that in the group’s press bio they explicitly note that they are not a Nazi band, which fans will find refreshing in a black metal scene that finds many listeners pouring through social media pages to check for band’s political leanings before the music comes into the equation.

All in all, a very enjoyable outing from this duo of German metal veterans. Highly recommend for fans of the classic 2nd wave Black Metal sound that may feel that outside influences are wearing their welcomes thin in the modern era.
