Sepulchral Whore – ”Everlasting Morbid Delights” (Metal Ways Records)

I might be a bit peculiar, but I like to listen to a release first, before I read the biog that comes with it, to make my own impressions first, rather than end up just rewriting the press release. Sometimes that can have some odd results. For example, Sepulchral Whore deliver an EP which is absolutely old-school Swedish death metal from beginning to end.  That wasn’t the major source of confusion for me though, I’ve heard a lot of “Swedish death” from various countries. Where I did get completely lost, though, was with a spoken segment in French. I was quite happy to think that they were French or Swiss, but no, they’re actually from Recife which is in Brazil (according to the internet).  Just to compound matters, immediately after I’d made this discovery, my other half walked into the room and said “quite brutal, sounds Swedish, are they from South America?” (Obviously hadn’t heard the French bit!).

This is very raw (but by design I suspect) death metal, played by more than competent musicians. It comes as no surprise that they quote Entombed, Carcass and Pungent Stench amongst their “liked” bands. Just think about any of the Swedish death bands of the early era and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect.  Heavy great lumps of riffing, distorted vocals and the occasional blastbeat.  The track that is being promoted most on social media is the final one of six (I didn’t count the intro) “Necromancer’s Rites” and it pretty much encapsulates the whole vibe of the EP.

There’s nothing wrong with this as a technical exercise, my only criticism would be that it’s not exactly offering anything I haven’t heard  before.
