VARG “Das Ende Aller Lügen”
Napalm Records

German wolves VARG are back with their red and black corpse-paint, angry lyrics and great mix of genres.

For many critics it’s hard to decide what genre the band play. Somebody says they are playing black/death metal, others take it to pagan or Viking metal. Several even say about metalcore. It’s not surprising at all, because there are elements from each genre. And sometimes it can be heard even in one track, not a whole album.

However, their music understandable enough and many people like it. It means, ordinary listeners that not fans of extreme genres. Kind of “black/death for masses”. Looking back, twenty five years ago something similar happened with Metallica’s Black Album. There are some stereotypes and it’s hardly possible to hear something new in Das Ende aller Lügen, but not every band needs it.

Back to the album: it will be released in two versions – German and English lyrics. It’s difficult to choose what’s best: lyrics in German sounds more aggressive and “in style”, but English lyrics more understandable,   of course. By the way, Deluxe Edition includes a cd with music only, without vocals. Not bad idea, because songs are catchy, and somebody want to sing them.

Das Ende aller Lügen (or The End of All Lies) opens with quote from classic movie “The Great Dictator”, that determines the mood of whole album. Then it changed with so-called “Das Ende aller Lügen”. The first video from this album was filmed for this song.

If we’re talking about genres and styles mix, it needs to mention “Dunkelheit” and “Winterstorm”. The last one is started with black-metal drums and guitars line, slows the tempo for solo, more inherent to heavy and goes back to blackened. Moreover, it sounds so organically that there are no misunderstandings.

“Achtung” is typical Neue Deutsche Härte. Marching guitar riffs and simple chorus. For sure, thousands people will shout “achtung” at the same time during live shows.

Tender keyboards intro with clean female vocals in “Totentanz” (“Dance of Death”) are surprising and absolutely unexpected from a band like Varg. That does not detract from its merits.

Finally, “Ascheregen” – a ballad, more inherent to German metal Icons like Rammstein and OOMPH!. One more typical Neue Deutsche Härte track and a worthy ending of the album.

Resuming, it can be said that Das Ende aller Lügen is a really good album. There are no innovations, but quality, perfect sound and catchy songs, which will be in playlists and iPods a long time.

Album will be released in January, 15 by Napalm records.
