WALPYRGUS “Walpyrgus Nights”
Cruz Del Sur Music

I agreed to review this album, one mad day, solely based on the biography… the promise was influences ranging from Iron Maiden, The Scorpions, Black Sabbath and even early Slayer and The Ramones. Bands I all love…

So what have Walpyrgus, who feature band members from While Heaven Wept and Twisted Tower Dire, actually delivered?

Not a Traditional Metal album, that’s for sure… and no sign of the aggression of Slayer or the Ramones….

Opening number The Dead Of Night is Power Metal Meets Hard Rock and then we have Somewhere Under Summerwind… man, I have no idea what to call this… it’s super commercial… to me, it’s very modern/poppy, with a few Power Metal leanings. This is nothing like the music I was expecting to hear. And I really don’t like it, at all. I even have strange visions of Hanoi Rocks being an Emo band, and it ain’t pretty.

The plus points are the guitars. On tracks like Palmystry they remind me of Thin Lizzy jamming with Maiden… but the vocals really are Power Metal at best. And that’s a genre that’s very hit and miss for me. But if you like the sugary sweet hit of Power Metal, then this might be favourable to your ears.

But for me, I don’t see any connection with their influences, bar a bit of Maiden.

In a word, disappointing.
