This may not be the most interesting album you’ll ever hear, but it does have some real energy that makes it easy to get through, and pretty thrilling in some parts.
The first track, Mental Radiation Fix, has a great intro with explosive riffs and long screams. It sets the mood for the rest of the album: fast and explosive tracks, around three minutes long, with an angry tone and evil-sounding vocals. The strange, roaring and hissing raspy growls, delivered like a kind of evil declamation, are one of the best parts of the album. I could also mention the cliché but fun distortion of religious themes found in the titles, like Crown of Horns or Divine Prostitution.
But the real other best part is that, like I said, those tracks have a lot of really great energy. It’s hard to stay still, during the wild black metal riffs of Crown of Horns and Introvert Vile Domain, the thrashy Avanti Christo or the imposing and evil Divine Prostitution and of course the amazing Mental Radiation Fix. These tracks have such a great evil energy that they’re never too hard to finish or too boring. They’re very headbangeable, and they never feel tired. This despite that most other songs feel like a less interesting variation on Mental Radiation Fix.
They tend to sound a little less interesting than the first track, and they sound kind of similar. You need a few more listens to be able to appreciate the difference between each song, and the nice little things that each of them brings to the table: the more black/thrash style of tracks like Avanti Christo or Symbols, which also has some great drumming, the almost groovy riffs of The Evil Mainframe, or the two last tracks’ big and threatening feel, even though those two are also a little two similar to each other.
I guess what I mean to say is that this album has potential, but isn’t great yet. It’s too pumped-up to be really dull, but it’s unfortunately repetitive and derivative. It reminds me of a less memorable and creative version of that Black Sun Brotherhood I reviewed last year. However, if you can be compared to Black Sun Brotherhood, it means you’re probably doing something right, so let’s see what becomes of that band in a few years.
