ANGAKOK “Angakok”

Liège (or Luik or Lüttich or Lidje – it depends on which language we use: French, Netherlands, German or maybe Walloon) is third-largest after Brussels and Antwerp city in Belgium. Third largest, but oldest – at least if we take a look on mentioned above cities. It’s also very important educational, economic and logistic center of whole country.  There’re many monuments (in what there’s nothing strange if we’ll mention that first references about Liège come from 558) and city has many to offer to adorers of culture.

For us the most important is musical field here. To say it more precisely – we’re very interested in one of its “territories”. As we can gather (or at least strongly suppose) from the name we can expect something strange here. My personal types were Doom, Ambient or Black Metal. This first version was for me, hell knows why, the most probable. And well… I was again right or maybe stroke home. Anyway, ANGAKOK is relative young band. Their beginning was in 2009 and it seems that since that line-up didn’t change. What can be a little surprised for some of you there play only three guys – Run (dr), Baston (guit. samples) and Ben (voc. guit. samples).

OK, but let’s cut to the chase! “Angakok” is first full-length of the band and only second release. Oddity here can be fact that the first one (EP from 2012) had the same title. I have no idea why guys decided just like that. Maybe album contains stuff from EP or is specific continuation, supplement…?!? Never mind!!! Maybe I’ll get answer on this question in the future or maybe I’ll don’t… However, music which we have opportunity to listen to on this album is surely Doom Metal. Guys add also word: “Sludge”. In any case I’m impressed by climate which we have here. This band is also the best proof that there’s unnecessary whole army of musicians to create real sepulchral, depressive music. As it happens in Doom Metal we have here very low tempos, high pitched guitars, massive (but also very slow of course – at least in, let’s say, 99, 8% of parts) drums. All this is complement by a little receding, but very well hearable hoarse Ben’s voice. Riffs are raw and spare.

In general I don’t recommend to listen to it with light out in the room. It takes at least people who are open on depression and don’t like it…
