Brujeria “Pocho Aztlan”
Nuclear Blast records
Since their murky beginnings in the early 1990s, Mexican-American aural bandits Brujeria have shocked and entertained in equal measures and continue to do this with Poncho Aztlan, their first full length album in sixteen years and with this album they prove they still have plenty of spite and anger.
With the very real and terrifying threat of Donald Trump becoming the president of the United States imminent, the release of a new Brujeria album is perfectly timed and the scourge of Mexico is a prime target for the band to attack witness the single Viva Presidente Trump released prior to this album and the fact thattheir upcoming US tour is entitled Make America Hate Again and features a tour poster depicting a machete taken to Trumps head) and they focus their hatred with intensity.
Musically not much has changed since their last album Brujerizmo with the band sticking to their mixture of grindcore and metal but if it’s not broke, don’t fix it and tracks like Profecia Del Anticristo, Satongo and Mexico Campeon are all pummelling slices of deathly grind that are played with a hardcore intensity.
Other tracks on the album such as menacing stomp of Bruja- and Contigos allow for a slight change of pace but they still attack with the same ferocity as the rest of the album and the whole experience feels like an all out attack.
The members of Brujeria (featuring some stalwarts of extreme metal who will remain nameless taking on different personas here) put in a faultless display of deathgrind throughout the album and the riffs are on point on every song with frontman Juan Brujo barking out the lyrics in Spanish about such subjects as drug trafficking and immigration, with a pissed off glee and often with a tongue in cheek humour which is the typical Brujeria way.
The hatred on show towards various targets is electrifying and the album is the musical equivalent of that machete in Donald Trumps head. With so much going on in the world and with so much to hate, let’s hope the band don’t leave it another sixteen years for the follow up. Viva Brujeria!
