Let’s get swept up in the changing moods and tides of this atmospheric black metal album. It may not be the best or most interesting album in that vein, but it makes a very good soundtrack for a rainy, moody day.

The album begins with the sound of waves crashing, in a song appropriately titled “Riptide Tune”. It alternates between furious riffs and sweet melodies, like the changing moods of the sea. Its melodies manage to stick in your mind, they are very soothing and make you think of an immersion in nature.

That’s the track with the most obvious association to nature, but the others can be just as atmospheric, in the sense that they make you think of the weather or natural settings. “Sidereal” has a deep, somber doom metal sound, with heavily distorted riffs (and a much faster, almost thrash-y bridge), with sinister growls and desperate screams all through the song, while “Riptide” barely had any vocals. The combination of those particular elements brings to mind something like a grey, heavy day and a sudden storm.

“Chiaroscuro” is an instrumental interlude with a similar mellow and melancholic tone to “Riptide”, but with something slightly eerie to it, like the calm before the storm. “Irreversible”, which comes right afterwards, would be that storm, but it feels angry and mellow at the same time, with its nice, sweet riff and deep growls.

“Rain Colours” goes back to the nature refences. It does indeed feel like rain, sometimes gentle and sometimes furious, with its mix of heavy but melancholic guitars, loud growls and whispered vocals. Its music also feels so delicate and cold, like a raindrop.

Finally, the title track feels like the rightful conclusion of the album: the most complex tracks, with lots of changing moods and all the ideas from the previous songs rolled into one. Its soft guitar line, backed up by a heavier one and loud drums, feels cold and melancholic, like a rainy day once again. There’s both kind of sadness, devastating and mild, in the screamed and whispered vocals. I think this is the most complete track, the one that really fulfills the album’s promise of rain-themed atmospheric metal.

The other tracks do a pretty good job of that too, but they feel a little repetitive, like they constantly recycle the same melodies. Aside from repetitiveness, many parts of the album remind me of other similar artists. That is why I don’t think it’s a great album, but it’s definitely enjoyable. I think it conveys its rainy atmosphere very well, it does something really good with its the weather-depicted-as-music concept. It sounds pretty good, has some memorable and engaging melodies. It really works if you listen to it on a rainy day.
