Casket Music

YEAAH!!!!! Finally I got something what I was waiting since long time – band from Ukraine. My happiness is more about the fact that even I have possibility to listen to bands from eastern neighbor of Poland. Anyway, as I know they come from the city where since longer time take place warfare. Besides occupants don’t like Ukrainians, so they had to change their base from Donetsk for capitol of Ukraine – Kyiv.

Anyway, SCARLETH was formed quite long time ago – in 2005. But mostly coz of permanent changes in line-up (mostly vocalists was changing often) “The Silver Lining” released by English CASKET MUSIC is their second release ever – the first one was also full-length, entitled “Break the Silence”.

Album contains nine songs of melodic music. I wrote especially like that! Somewhere I found term Symphonic Power/Gothic Metal. But I’m not sure if it’s right one. I mean, here’s surely a lot elements of Symphonic Power, probably also Gothic, but I can hear for example some touches of Folk, progressive playing. In their bio I found something about Doom. Well, with that I can’t agree at all! It’s always possible that I have no idea what Doom Metal is and during these almost 30 years I thought wrong what is this sub-genre of Metal… However, music is melodic, as I mentioned above, and mostly calm, sometimes atmospheric or even romantic.

Viktor Morozov, who’s the only member from the first line-up, takes care about riffs. That’s they which are responsible sublimely for melody. In the same time they have right energy inside. Truth is that thanks to them we can connect music playing by SCARLETH with Power Metal. Of course (what is normal for this subgenre of Metal) he plays some solos, riffs which hardly can be connected with Metal sometimes. Adjective “symphonic” relates to keyboards, but to be honest they’re participation here isn’t big. They’re hearable of course from time to time, but in general Yana Kovalskaya hasn’t unduly a lot of work. In my opinion that’s good – thanks to it there’s no risk that music will become too sweet! Bassist (Artem Kravchenko) is probably strongly influenced by Funky. It’s hearable only when his instrument steps off the shadow. Playing of drummer (Philipp Kharoiuk) is variable, but mostly calm. Well, it can’t be in other way in music like that! Of course we have little faster fragments, passages, but they’re rather exceptions. OK, I mentioned all members of the band except one. Who I mean?!? Yes, it’s vocalist! It’s Ekatarina Kapshuk. She sings by clean vocal of course. Well, I’ll don’t describe her timbre or compare it to anyone. Anyway, she has fine voice. OH… There’re parts of extreme vocal here, too. They’re in trace amounts, but they’re, anyway. About them took care Oksana Element.

Well, to sum up it’s only for fans of music like that, I think. Somebody who likes WITHIN TEMPTATION and other acts in this vein should be satisfied with this album – even if music isn’t the same (there’re some differences, but rather subtle). This is surely good album, but for me it’s too calm. I’ll listen to it rarely, I guess.
