Fucked Up “Year Of The Snake”
Tankcrimes
Fucked Up are a band who have always transcended the genre of hardcore with their own unique take on it and their confident and epic musical output has ascended ever since their first album Hidden World which was realised back in 2006. Over the decade since that debut, the band have constantly evolved, although they remain hardcore at heart, the bands music has taken in so many different elements and their latest offering Year Of The Snake stays true to that ethos.
This release continues the Year Of The… Series of 12″s based on the Chinese Zodiac that the band have released every few years since they started and follows on from 2015s immense Year Of The Hare.
This release only contains two songs Year Of The Snake and Passacaglia but in those two songs, it contains more ideas and vision than most bands can conjure up on an entire album. The title track is almost twenty four minutes of glorious and triumphant hardcore punk (frontman Damian Abrahams roar is as powerful as ever) mixed in with many psychedelic and progressive soundscapes that appear and elevate throughout the song and these are elements that make the track a joy to listen to. The song at its heart deals with death but it is done in the most life affirming way possible and this is the beauty of the music of Fucked Up. Year Of The Snake starts off with the sound of a newborn baby and this starts off a musical journey that takes in so much passion, soul and power that will leave you with a feeling of energy that will take an age to leave.
As the track reached its end with an initial burst of piano that morphs into a surreal and blissful conclusion that ends with an obvious and concentrated finality, you are aghast at the sheer breadth and beauty of what you have listened to.
At a mere six minutes, the B Side Passacaglia is a comparative short, sharp shock but further shows the power of the bands music and sits well with the A Side.
Year Of The Snake is astounding and a fine addition to the body of work that Fucked Up have amassed over the years and demonstrates how good a band they are, a band that has never abandoned their hardcore punk roots but use them to take their music into new and exciting places.
