Interview with Kadaver, the frontman of the Norwegian Melodic Black Metal band, Istårn.
istarn_interview-640x300 Hello Kadaver, how things are going?
Hello, I’m good, thanks for asking.

First, tell me when was Istarn founded?
Istårn was founded in 2010 by me and our former bass player that went under the name “Likstein”. After a few months of searching, we found a drummer and a guitar player (Canistrum and Helltroll), and that was the basis for the band in 2010.

In 2013 you have released the debut album under the name of ”Skyggeland”, tell me about it.
“Skyggeland” is a very dear album to me, even though I see and recognize all its flaws. The studio we recorded it in was a rather “low key” one and the whole sound of the album is showing it, but even so, we did put alot of ourselves in to it, and alot of the songs on the album have alot of potential even if it didn’t manage to shine as much as it could. The recording was quite a short process. In, record, out. I personally think the album could have been a bit stronger if we had spent a bit more time in preparation of the recrding.

The EP, ”Downfall of the Gods”, is quie a different story. The studio was great, and we were a bit more prepared prior to the sessions we did with Conclave. We worked with Arve Idal and Hrbrand Larsen from Enslaved, and the production were quite ok. Although, if I am to be honest, I have alot of musical issues with the EP. I think it ounds way too thrash metal, and it lacks alot of energy. Quite repetetive in a bad way. The EP is sort of a good picture of what we were when we started, but not a very good image of who we are today.

What are the band’s influences and what are the lyrical themes?
We have alot of different inspirations. I mysef is quite inspired by Satyricon, but that doesn’t og for the rest of the band. Our two guitar players, Gnom and Dormin is quite heavily prog inspired while our bas player, Valkyrie, is quite the Taake fan, so we ar currentl a bit everywhere on the Spectrum.

Will you release a new album soon?
We are currently working with new material, and we hope that it won’t be too long until it is done and ready to be released for people to hear.

Any shows confirmed for this or for the next year?
Nothing as of now, since we’re working on the new material. We hope to announce something when we’re closing in on the finish line.

Do you have a message for your fans?
I wish to thank anyone who supports not only us, but the whole scene. We could never do this if it weren’t for you.

All the best Kadaver and thank you for the answers. Cheers!
Cheers!
